British Standard Door Locks

Insurance companies often ask for door locks to British Standard BS3621 or a minimum of 5 levers. BS3621 requires that the door locks from the inside with a key, so that any thief cannot get out through it. The idea is that they have to leave any bulky goods behind.

As well as BS3621 there are other British Standards. The most important are probably BS8621 and BS10621. All have at least 5 levers.

BS8621 has all the security benefits of the lock above but lets you get out without the use of a key. This is ideal where there are fire escapes or places where quick exit is required. Make sure that there are no windows or letter flaps close by, so that nobody can open the lock from outside.

BS10621 adds key manipulation, by a locksmith, from the outside to bypass the escape functions of the lock on the inside. This is ideal for the last person out of the building who has to lock up. If someone breaks in elsewhere they cannot use the door as a means of escape, as they could with BS8621.

All of the above locks should be able to:

    • Resist attack from drilling the case of the lock for at least 5 minutes and the bolt must also resist attack for 5 minutes by cutting or drilling.
    • Resist picking.
    • Have at least 1000 different keys for each manufacturer’s range of the above locks.
